Abstract

The article reveals the essence of the historical prerequisites of the church reform at beginning of the 18th century. It analyses relations between the Tsars and the Patriarchs, as the heads of secular and religious authorities.
The period under investigation begins in 1547 – the year of the coronation of Ivan Grozny and ends in 1721 with the establishment of the Holy Governmental Synod. This period covers the turning points of Russian history – the decline of the Rurik dynasty, the confrontation between Godunov and
the first Romanovs, the difficulties of international relations of the Russian Kingdom and the coming to power of the Romanovs. Among that part of the work, which deals directly with the rule of the Romanovs, special emphasis
is placed on the patriarchs Filaret and Nikon. It was these two patriarchs who enjoyed maximum authority of both state and church activities. And it was their activity that marked the future finish of the patriarchal period and the beginning of a new period in the history of the Russian Church.
