Faith and religiosity of contemporary Polish Catholics at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries in the light of the results of social research

Abstract

Social life is continuously changing. The aim of the article is to point out that along with those changes, religion, as well as its place in the structure of human needs and its role in social life, is also changing. Postmodernity has brought pluralisation and individualisation of life. The consequence
of that is the changeability of attitudes and the possibility to make new non-binding choices. Religion, on the other hand, is a carrier of permanent norms and values. The place where the two realities meet is in a believer. In
recent years, we have observed a decreasing number of people in Polish society declaring themselves as deeply religious, and an increasing number of non-believers. Yet, the number of those who define themselves as believing
in God is increasing. Still, it is a selective faith. It means a departure from institutionalised faith towards the sacralisation of the self, experiencing one’s relationship with God in an autonomous way, without the sense of
obligation.
