Abstract

The aim of this publication is to make available a previously unknown document belonging to Pachomius (Kedrov) Archbishop of Nezhin and Chernihiv, that is preserved in the archives of the True Orthodox (IPTs) community of Chernihiv, as well as to verify and correct two dates important to the biography of Archbishop Pachomius: the date of his consecration as bishop, and the date of his departure into exile outside of Ukraine. The previously recorded dates, widely accepted by researchers and historians, have been shown to be inaccurate. The new evidence presented in this publication is the inclusion of a previously unknown document: the Lenten epistle of Archbishop Pachomius (Kedrov), dated February 3rd, 1924, as well as the examination of the above indicated questions on the basis of the information found in the newly published document and other Church documents of the 1920’s. Conclusions: first of all, the widely accepted date
throughout historical literature of Archbishop Pachomius’ (Kedrov’s) episcopal consecration as November 29th, 1923 is mistaken. Archbishop Pachomius (Kedrov) was consecrated bishop in 1922, somewhere between May 18th
and October 21st. Secondly, Archbishop Pachomius (Kedrov) left Ukraine by order of the OGPU not in 1924, as was mistakenly noted in historical literature and in several encyclopedia articles, but in the Autumn of 1923, not before September 22nd, and not later than September 25th.
