When Sergius Kimbar began to run the Supraśl Monastery: Clarifying the chronology of the first abbots

Abstract

The article reviews the attempts made since the end of the first third of the 17th century to establish the chronology of the first abbots running the Supraśl Annunciation Monastery. Based on the surviving documentary and literary sources, modern assumptions on this topic are critically assessed. The main attention is paid to determining the beginning of the abbotship of the first Supraśl archimandrite Sergius Kimbar, which is usually attributed to 1532 (his predecessors did not have the title of archimandrite). This issue is considered against the background of documented information about the activities of his predecessors and himself. It is concluded that Sergius started running the monastery five years earlier than it is usually believed: not later than August 1527, when he tonsured the priest Alexius (Arsenius in monasticism) who had joined the monastery, since this is the prerogative of the abbot. This happened shortly after the Supraśl monk Nil, who for some time was the administrator of the monastery, arbitrarily moved (not later than May 1527) to Derman along with a part of the monastery property. Two years later the use of the title archimandrite was first documented in relation to the unnamed Supraśl abbot by a royal charter of October 23, 1529, which also indicates that Sergius Kimbar began to run the monastery earlier than is usually believed. An updated chronology of the first Supraśl abbots is attached.
