Midrash commentary of Yalkut Shimoni on Psalm 23

Abstract

The article aims to present the main theological themes contained in the midrash Yalkut Shimoni to Psalm 23. Yalkut Shimoni is one of the most important medieval midrash anthologies. Knowledge of the interpretation of Psalm 23 contained in the Yalkut enables an understanding of the meaning of the biblical text in medieval Judaism and contributes to an understanding of the specificity of the midrash as a collection of statements by rabbinic authorities from different eras and backgrounds. The midrash presents the content of Psalm 23 from the historical perspective of the nation of Israel wandering in the desert. However, the author of the Yalkut does not forget the perspective of the individual by locating the biblical text in the specific circumstances of the psalmist’s life, pointing out that the history of the nation is an integral part of the history of the individual, just as the experience of an individual can be a picture of the history and experiences of the national collective.
