Polish bell in Smolensk: historical and archaeological research

Abstract

The article is devoted to the historical and archaeological study of the Polish bell in Smolensk, a unique artifact of the first half of the XVII century. This historical and cultural object is one of the important elements of Polish heritage in the Smolensk region. Based on the studied materials, a comprehensive historical description of the Smolensk Polish bell of 1636 is given for the first time: its original location is established, the circumstances of its appearance in Smolensk are revealed and the history of its existence here is traced, presumably the master manufacturer is determined. The fate of the bell in the XX century is highlighted, including against the background of the wild bolshevik campaign to destroy the bells. The great importance of the studied artifact for the scientific, ecclesiastical and art criticism community of Russia, Poland, Lithuania and Belarus was noted.
