The Essence of the Sacraments and the Consequent Mystical Validity of the Sacraments of the Orthodox Church

Abstract

This article analyses the concept of the sacraments and their essence from the perspective of the teachings of the Orthodox Church. It points out many areas closely related to the sacraments of the Church as the mystical Body of Christ and the unceasing Pentecost. Among them are issues concerning the ecclesiality of the sacraments, the minister of the sacraments, their visible and invisible dimensions, the Trinitarian mystery of the Church and the place of the Eucharist in the Church. The Church and the sacraments are the same reality. The Church, as the Body of Christ, is realized through the sacraments and, in a special way, through the Eucharist, which is its foundation and source of life. The Orthodox Church strongly emphasizes the importance of and our need for the sacramental life. The sacraments of the Church are a special and specific way of imparting God’s saving grace. They are a continuation of the miracles of Christ presented in the Gospels and the mystery of salvation realized through the participation of the saving grace of God and human free will.
