Orthodox Higher Theological Education in Poland – past and present

Abstract

This article describes the history of three Orthodox Educational Institutions in Poland. The first one - the Orthodox School of Theology at the University of Warsaw - was established in 1925 and operated throughout
the interwar period. It played an essential role in the steady functioning of the Orthodox Church in Poland which was granted autocephalous status by the Ecumenical Patriarchate on November 13, 1924. The two others,
Section of Orthodox Theology at the Faculty of Theology at the Christian Theological Academy in Warsaw, and Orthodox Theological Seminary in Warsaw were established several years after the World War II, in 1954 and 1951 respectively. They provide the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church with, among others, educated (to Bachelor or Master levels) priests, religious education teachers, church and social workers.
