The article reveals the meaning of the concept of antinomy according to
the writings of the theologian of the twentieth century Protopresbyter John
Meyendorff. The term is considered in a theological context only. Fr John
Meyendorff gives the definition of the concept, indicates the reasons for the
existence of antinomies and the place of the concept in Orthodox theology.
The reason for the existence of antinomies is the transcendent-immanent
existence of God, and, accordingly, the inexpressibility of the mystical experience of knowing God in logically justified and consistent statements.
Meyendorff analyzes a number of antinomies of Orthodox theology (the
Unity and Trinity of God, the unity of the divine and human natures in
Christ, the theosis of man as a created being, Divine omnipotence and free
human will, sacramental and personal in the spiritual life of man). According
