The Context of the education in pastoral counselling in the U.S.A.

Olgierd Benedyktowicz

Abstract

Chaplaincy includes a clear pedagogical context, education and child care. Pastoral counselling has been established in the United States and there is now the most practiced in church in America. Rogerian approach and theological reflection by Richard Niebhur are the scope of analysis in contemporary pedagogical aspect of pastoral counselling in both its theoretical and practical terms. Pedagogical impact of the clergy is more effective and what is more important, is confirmed by the concrete commitment and action in the social environment. One of the best known examples, which may constitute an illustration of this process, is Sanctuary Movement in the U.S. discussed in this text. Those involved in the activities of the Sanctuary Movement in majority declared its strong relationship with the Church and Christian values emphasized by the fact that a decisive influence on their decisions has been in contact with a priest, to whom they turned with their personal problems, often without being aware of, or at least interested in suffering, loneliness, marginalization of other people. The pastoral counselling is actuated transgression mechanism of individual psychologically difficult experience of the social dimension, and what is more important taking action to improve or change the status quo.
