History of editions of the Gothic Bible

Leszek Jańczuk

Abstract

The Gothic Bible was edited several times. The editions of Junius (1665), Bezelius (1750), Gabelentz and Loebe (1836), Bernhardt (1875), Streitberg (1908-1910, 1919) belong to the most important. The first editions contained only the text of Codex Argenteus, because it was the only available manuscript of the Gothic Bible. Since the end of the 18th century, new manuscripts were discovered and new editions of the Gothic Bible were prepared. These editions usually have the Latin or the Greek text added and in result, their work can be used by biblical scholars. Unfortunately, the German specialists who have translated the Greek text have not followed the Gothic text as it stands, but proposed a hypothetical Greek text based on Codex Alexandrinus (Bernhardt) or the theory of Hermann von Soden (Streitberg). For that reason the Gothic Bible is almost not cited in the critical editions of the Greek New Testament.
