Popularity vs sanctity

The transformation of Pentecostal ritual in the context of changing cultural codes and the content of religious songs

Abstract

The text illuminates the complex tension between “holiness” and “popularity” in Pentecostal rituals. By analysing changes in worship and hymnography, the work presents the evolution of evangelical music from traditional hymns to modern forms of Christian ritual music, which believers refer to as “worship music”. The influence of American evangelicalism on Polish Pentecostalism after 1989 has indeed led to changes that in many cases have resulted in the gradual commercialization of worship. The article highlights contemporary dangers observed in the evangelical Pentecostal community related to the dominance of musical bands over traditional religious symbols. The paper uses historical analysis, case studies, and cultural criticism to analyse how theological heritage attempts to integrate with modernity.
