Borrowings from the terminology of the Roman Catholic Church in the lexis of Polish Orthodoxy

Latinisms

Abstract

Polish Orthodox terminology is a set of lexemes reflecting the intersection of the linguistic influences of Byzantine-Ruthenian and Latin Christianity. The aim of this article is to present the terms of Latin provenance, such as “celibate”, “komunia”, “ordynariusz”, functioning in the religious language of the Polish Orthodox Church and to indicate the reasons and problems associated with their borrowing. The analysed lexemes were extracted from the “Słownika polskiej terminologii prawosławnej [Dictionary of Polish Orthodox Terminology” edited by W. Przyczyna, K. Czarnecka and M. Ławreszuk. Most of these terms are adapted from the nomenclature of the Roman Catholic Church.
