J.A. Bengels Motto as a kind of introduction to the Novum Testamentum Graecae. A critical interpretation

Grzegorz Olek

Abstract

The Introduction to the Stuttgarts Novum Testamentum Graece from 3. to 25. edition was preceded by a J.A. Bengels Motto: “te totum applica ad textum; rem totam applica ad te”, which constituted a kind of preface, setting the enterprise historically and proposing a defined ethos of historical-philological research on the Text of NT. The following Article is dedicated to the task of examination of possible grounds for inserting and removing of Bengels Motto in the editions of NTG – the article begins with an analysis of Motto in the context of Bengels Works, and then is focusing on the reception of the figure of the Teacher from Denkendorf by Eberhard Nestle, Erwin Nestle and Kurt Aland.
