Gospel paratexts in the Anthologion of Matthew the Tenth

Subscriptions to Gospels and final stichometry

Abstract

Anthologion of Matthew the Tenth is a codex containing biblical books and liturgical texts. It was composed in Vilnius and Suprasl, where it was completed in 1507. Previous researches have indicated the affinity of the New Testament books in the Antologion to manuscripts belonging to the Bosnian tradition and the compilatory character of this exceptional codex.

The subject of this publication is Gospel's paratexts present in the Anthologion of Matthew the Tenth. An analysis of their number, placement and order has confirmed compilatory character of the codex. The copyist used at least two manuscripts with Gospel texts. The first belonged to an older tradition and was, most likely, of Bosnian origin, while the second represented a younger tradition (after the 14th century) and featured a large number of paratexts. Analysis of the subscriptions to the Gospels and the final stichometry also confirmed this evidence.
